AUSTRALIAN BEEF

Vast Development Scheme

GUARANTEED MARKET IN BRITAIN

NZPA—Copyright

Rec. 7 p.m. LONDON, July 20. An agreement between Britain and Australia on a plan to make Australia one of the greatest beef producing areas in the world is expected to be announced in London soon, says Reuter. Under the plan Australia will have a guaranteed market in Britain for all her surplus meat for the next 15 years. A £5,000,000 capital development scheme to open up large areas in Northern Australia for cattle farming was put before the British Government last year and a “ gentleman’s agreement” was established by which Britain undertook to buy the surplus meat produced. On that understanding the preliminary work on surveys for new roads and irrigation projects was put in hand.

Australia has asked for an agreement providing a floor price in respect of each kind of meat to stand for a period of years with annual discussions on prices. The immediate benefits to the British larder will be small as the development is essentially long-term. Australian sources estimate an eventual annual production of 540,000 tons of beef.
