PACIFIC PACT

Proposal In Commons Rejected

NZPA—Reuter—Copyright LONDON, July 19. . The Minister of State, Mr Kenneth Younger, today rejected a proposal that Britain should begin discussions for a Pacific pact on the same lines as the Atlantic Treaty. To a question in the House of Commons by Mr John Smythe, Conservative, urging this, he replied briefly: “No, sir.” ■ Mr Smythe said that there was considerable feeling that the ordinary leisurely methods of diplomacy were just not good enough in the present situation. It was necessary that the nonCommunist peace-loving peoples of the Pacific should get together and make a plan if the next world war was to be averted, he said. The Minister did not reply.
