COMPETITIONS SOCIETY

New Secretary Appointed At a meeting of the Dunedin Competitions Society held on Monday, Mr Thomas C. Marshall, of Dunedin, was appointed to the position of secretary in place of Mr J. W. Wilson, who has resigned or. account of ill-health. Arrangements for this year’s festival were outlined. It was reported that the syllabus and books of words, which had been revised and amended, were ready for printing and would soon be available to competitors. The judges for this year’s festival are: Elocution, Mr J. R. Lester, B.Sc., Christchurch; vocal music, Mr L. E. Dailey, Invercargill; instrumental and assistant vocal music, Mrs Audrey Gibson-Foster, L.R.S.M., Wellington; dancing, Miss Betty Carnochan, Christchurch. Owing to the greatly increased costs of promoting the festival, endeavours are being made to coniine the competitions to a 10-dav period, by which method it is expected that finance will be conserved without detracting from the cultural value of the work presented. The Concert Chamber, the YWCA Hall, the Jubilee Hall, and the Burns Hall will be used for day sessions and the evening sessions will be held in the Concert Chamber.
