PUBLIC RELATIONS

Council Discussion PORT CHALMERS BOROUGH Methods by which better public relations could be established were discussed at the meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council last night. “Many people, I am sure, have no idea of the activities of this council, Cr L. G. Crawford said. “To promote better public relations, I propose that we should advertise our meetings more, let the general public? know that it is allowed to attend our meetings, and that we should issue a news letter after each meeting and post it on the borough notice board.” Cr H. Williamson said that the newspapers ■ just reported anything that savoured of sensationalism. The real work of the, council, he said, was not reported in the papers. Cr W. D. Campbell: The papers never give a fair and accurate report. Cr R. E. Reeves: It is not the fault of the papers. We get what we deserve. “ I am not in favour at all of the news letter,” Cr L. G. Neilson said. “Election time is when the public should be interested, but then we find there are hardly enough nominations for the positions on the council. That shows how much the people are interested! ” Cr H. Williamson then proposed that committee reports should be made available, to the newspapers a few days before the meetings, as they were in Dunedin. The public would then know what would be discussed at the meetings. All these proposals were adopted.
