COMMUNITY SERVICE
Dunedin Savings Bank SIR DONALD CAMERON NEW PRESIDENT There were few of Dunedin’s citizens who were not in some way linked with with this “ people’s bank,” said the retiring president of the Dunedin Savings Bank, Mr J. W. Dove, at the annual meeting of trustees yesterday. Mr Dove said that the accounts showed that the bank had 60,000 depositors and some 3000 mortgages. “ I should like to draw your particular attention to the service this institution renders to the people of Dunedin,” Mr Dove said. “Our new budgeting department is proving of real worth in assisting depositors, free of charge, to meet many of those recurring commitments which can so easily be a source of worry, while the gratuitous service in handling some £2,000,000 of National Savings is making its contribution towards a thrifty community.” Mr Dove said in this regard that the bank’s thrift clubs were achieving a remarkable position. Last year some 250 firms in this city made use of that department, and the staff handled 6000 accounts, and many thousands of pounds. For the twelve months, there were approximately 189,000 deposits to Thrift Club accounts with the bank. The Mayor, Sir Donald Cameron, was elected president for the coming year, with Mr R. Walls, MP, as deputypresident. The seven trustees of the bank, who were appointed by the Government, are: The president and deputy-president, Messrs Dove, M. Connelly, J. H. Hamel, A. Steel and Dr D. G. McMillan.
