Ranfurly In The Lead Special to the Daily Times RANFURLY, May 14. ■ The third round of matches in the Maniotpto Rugby competition was played on Saturday. Bright sunshine prevailed, but a cold northerly wind upset back Play. Results:— Ida Valley 6, Gimmerburn 5. Southern 9, Naseby 3. Patearoa 15, Becks 8. Ranfurly 5, Strath-Taieri 3. After a drawn game with Becks on the previous Saturday, Ida Valley again caused a surprise by defeating Gimmerburn in a hard-fought match. By defeating Strath-Taieri Ranfurly is the only team with three wins. Ranfurly had a hard struggle against Strath-Taieri. and was fortunate to stave off defeat in the closing stages. Strath-Taieri played with the advantage of sun and wind in the first spell, and with a superior pack of forwards had Ranfurly on the defensive most of the spell. Although the Strath-Taieri backs had plenty of the ball, they could not penetrate the Ranfurly defence. The only points in the first spell came just before half time, when, After a scrum on the line, Hamill dived over at the corner to score for Strath-Taieri. Ranfurly opened the second spell with a series of attacks. Soon after J. P. Kearney scored a try, which was converted by' E. J. Kearney. Winning in the line outs and a majority of the scrums, StrathTaieri had the better of the closing stages. For the winners Forrester played a good game in the forwards, and W. Meates was the best back. For Strath-Taieri, McConnell and Heffernan ably led the forwards, while Jones, was prominent in the line outs. In a junior Rugby match Strath-Taieri defeated Patearoa by 11 points to 5. WOMEN'S HOCKEY Two high-scoring women’s hockey games were played at Ranfurly on Saturday. In the first match Gimmerburn proved too strong for Ranfurly District High School, and won by 6 goals to nil. In the second game Ranfurly and Naseby drew with 5 goals each. In the other competition match Patearoa had a comfortable win over Becks by 10 goals to 3. WOMEN’S GOLF Mrs A. McLean won the Flag Match played by the lady members of the Maniototo Golf Club on Saturday. DEFENCE RIFLES ' The shoot for the Mathias Shield which is open to ipembers of Federated Farmers only, was decided at the Wedderburn range on Saturday. The entries were reasonably good, but good shooting was difficult in the windy conditions. The winner was J. A. Cromb with a score of 91. The Wedderburn and Gimmerburn Clubs both held sweepstakes in conjunction with the shield shoot. G. Robertson, with 82—18—100, won the Wedderburn competition, and the Gimmerburn competition was won by I. Davis with 97 2—99.

The Ladies’ Miniature Rifle Club held a shoot at Wedderburn for the rose bowl for the first time since 1939. The first shoot ended in a tie, and in the shoot-off Mrs L. L. Smith,, with a total score of 72, defeated Mrs Burnside, who scored 68.
