QUIETER TONE

Most Lines Of Seeds RYEGRASS IN DEMAND A quieter tone has been apparent in most lines of seeds during the week but a fair amount of business has nevertheless been recorded. White clover remains steady at the lower level recorded last week with buyers still in market whenever vendors are prepared to meet them. Overseas inquiries are still being made, but as sales are subject to licence at the other end it is almost impossible to assess the quantity of seed that will ultimately be shipped.

Inquiries are still being received for Timothy and cocksfoot and it appears that the quantity of seed produced this year may not be sufficient for domestic requirements. Prices have reached the highest level yet recorded. There is a steady demand for Chewings fescue and crested dogstail, and merchants are busy filling orders accepted earlier in the season. High prices continue for certified and uncertified perennial, Italian, and short rotation ryegrass. Not a great deal of seed is on offer and the germinations vary from good to indifferent. Business has been recorded in Montgomery red clover and cowgrass, an(l buyers are still operating. The potato market is quiet and with the present flush of deliveries local retailers should have sufficient supplies on hand for some time. The shipping demand is also slack as North Island merchants are drawing on their own crops which have produced heavy yields this y< The oats market is lifeless, millers having now secured their requirements for the vear. There is no demand from the North Island for feed oats, and the outlet for this line is restricted. Some varieties of peas have been meeting with an inquiry, but prices are still at a level which shows merchants a substantial loss.
