SEAL IN LAGOON
Trout Fishing Spoiled PA INVERCARGILL, May 12. A deadly menace to trout roams unchecked in the Waituna lagoon--19 miles from Invercargill—which has been land-locked for a year. It is a seal, and how it got there is a mystery that may never be solved. It has torn the stomach from dozens of fish. . , . , , Permission for the seal to be destroyed was given by the Minister of Marine, •Mr Goosman, yesterday after urgent representations had been made by the Southland Acclimatisation Society. Rangers in a boat will stalk the seal within a few days and shoot it. The society was told at a meeting at Invercargill last night that complaints had been received all the season about the poor fishing in the lagoon. The reason puzzled anglers, and there seemed no logical explanation. A month ago; however, the seal was seen for the first time . Last week there was plenty of evidence of the destruction it is causing, for dead trout with half their stomachs torn away were seen.
