WELLINGTON WOOL

Progressive Price Increase Maintained FINAL SALE OF SEASON PA WELLINGTON, May 12. Prices from 10 to 15 per cent, higher than those ruling at the previous Wellington auction on March 25 were obtained today at the final Wellington wool sale for the current selling season. Each successive local sale this season has been marked by a progressive increase in prices. The market today, compared with the Wanganui sale earlier in the week, was very firm for fleece wool and for some lines up by 2$ per cent. Skirtings and iamb’s wool realised slightly higher prices. The Continent was the principal buyer. Bradford operated moderately* and the United States was in the market for coarse wools. The official report says that the filial Wellington wool sale for the 1949-50 season was held today when catalogues of 18,400 bales of new season and 6200 bales of stockpile wool were offered. The offering comprised late shorn clips from the Rangitikei and Manawatu districts. These wools opened attractively, showing good average style and quality. There was also a large offering of lambs’ and oddments. Competition was well spread, with the Continent operating freely and consequently lifting the largest weight of wool. American orders for coarse wools resulted in extreme prices being paid for these types. Taking style and yield into consideration, the market for average wools was par to 2i per cent, dearer than recent sales. Compared with the previous Wellington sale held on March 25 average style wools were fully 10 to 12i per cent, higher, with coarse wools 15 per cent, and lambs’ 12£ per cent, higher.
