ITALY BEATS BRITAIN
Davis Cup Tennis Series NZPA—Copyright LONDON, May 9. Italy defeated Britain by 3 matches to 2 in the first round of the European zone tie of the Davis Cup. Today’s final Singles resulted:—Mottram (Britain) beat Del Bello, 6—3, 6 —3, B—6; Cucelli (Italy) beat Paish I—6, 6—2, 4—6, 6—4, B—6. • . Cucelli clinched a win for Italy m the last set, which was the most dramatic Davis Cup match in England for many years. When Paish put the ball into the net to give Cucelli the set B—6 and the match, the Italian collapsed and had to be helped to his feet before he could shake hands with his opponent. Every game had prolonged rallies. The Philippines, Sweden, Norway, Yugoslavia, Belgium and Italy were the winners of the first round of the European zone. The draw for the second round is: Israel v. Poland, Ireland v. Monaco, Peru v. Philippines, Sweden v. Norway, Yugoslavia v. Belgium, Italy v. Luxembourg, Egypt v. Denmark, France v. Switzerland. In the American zone Mexico has drawn Cuba and Canada has drawn Australia.
