Long-range Jet Fighters For Bomber Escorts

Rec. 8 p.m. WASHINGTON, May 8. United States jet fighters could escort bombers on a round trip of 3000 miles, an air force official stated today. The problem of a fighter’s limited range had been overcome in recent tests by refuelling in flight from tanker planes. The official said that the air force was not relying on aerial refuelling to permit all - the - way fighter escort for 836 bombers. These have an operating range of 5000 miles. The air force is experimenting with powerful rockets, which the 836 could carry, for added protection. Another possibility for the future is a small parasite plane, which could be released from the 836 when an attack threatened.
