OAMARU YOUTHS
First Draft For Burnham
The first draft of Oamaru 18-year-old youths left by special train yesterday afternoon for Burnham, where they will be stationed for three months under the compulsory military training scheme. The Mayor, Mi’ M. F. E. Cooney, briefly addressed the recruits, and members of the North Otago Highland Pipe Band provided music. Among those present to bid farewell to the youths were Mr J. S. Adams, chairman of the Waitaki County Council; Major K. R. Hutcheson, officer commanding D (Oamaru) Company, Ist Battalion of the Otago and Southland Regiment; and Mr I. T. Catto, president, and Mr A. C. Piper, secretary, of the Oamaru RSA. There were 12 youths in the Oamaru party.
