Two Survivors In Flying Boat Crash
Rec. 11 p.m. BRISBANE, May 8/ Five men died and one was seriously injured in a crash of a Catalina amphibious flying boat-at Georgetown, 335 miles south-west of Cairris. The remaining member of the crew had a remarkable escape from injury. He suffered only minor scratches. The Catalina was flying from Rathmines, New South Wales,*to Darwin. An hour before the crash the plane radioed Townsville that it intended landing at Georgetown for minor engine repairs. ‘This was the last message received and there were no witnesses of the crash. The plane was known to have circled the airstrip and was apparently coming in for a landing when it crashed into heavy timber. When local residents on horseback reached the scene the plane was already burning. Two hours after the crash an aerial ambulance arrived from Cairns with a doctor, and a relief plane from Townsville brought serum blood plasma and guards for the wreckage. The survivors we're flown to Cairns Hospital. : ‘ r
