Sabotage Suspected In Indian Train Disaster
Rec. 11 p.m. NEW DELHI, May 8; Orders were given today to shpot looters on sight after men were found stripping the corpses of people killed when the Punjab mail train ran off the rails 100 miles east of Patna, Bihar. The death roll of the crash, which occurred yesterday, is now stated., to be at least 81, with 100 people injured. Officials say they suspect sabotage. Bihar’s Minister of Rehabilitation, Abdul Quaiyum Ansaro, who narrowly escaped injury, sa.d he saw over 100 bodies of dead and injured scattered near the scene. The train slid 50ft down an embankment.
Another Bihar Minister, Abdul Qaiyun, confirmed that the derailment was due to sabotage. He said fishplates had been removed in two places. A month ago an attempt to sabotage the railway line was discovered near the scene of today’s crash. According to Indian Government figures 91 trains have been wrecked .in the past six months.
