STRONG COMPETITION
Wool Sales In Sydney And Melbourne Rec. 11.30 p.m. SYDNEY. May 8. Competition was strong from all sections, particularly the Continent, at the wool sales at Sydney today. The market was firm with rates generally 15 per cent, above Sydney’s closing rates on March 21 for all descriptions of merino and crossbred, but the shorter carbonising types did not show full appreciation. The selection comprised chiefly shorn wools. Only a few wools showed good length, the remainder being mostly medium quality. The top price was for seven bales of greasy combing. Of the 15,768 bales of ordinary and skin wools offered. 15,719 were sold. Competition was keen and widespread at the Melbourne wool sales today, Britain, the Continent, and America being the main buyers. There was a clearance of 6700 bales. The market was firm and compared with rates current in other centres at the close of last week was 5 per cent, to 7J per cent, dearer.
