May Day Demonstrators Fight Three-hour Battle With Police In London
NZPA—Copyright Rec. 8 p.m. LONDON, May 7. May Day demonstrators fought a three-hour battle with the police this afternoon in London’s West End. Hand-to-hand struggles flared up when 2000 Communist and trade unionist marchers converged on Trafalgar Square, and later when they swarmed towards Downing street and rushed the Cenotaph. Foot and mounted police broke up attempts i to form processions. Marchers, booing and some chanting the “ Red Flag,” fought back violently. Twelve police officers were injured, and 69 people, including two women, were arrested. They will be charged with assault and obstruction offences against public order. * , , The police seized the marchers’ banners and tore them up. Other police on horseback rode among demonstrators in the Strand and broke up groups trying to reach Trafalgar Square. • The demonstrators . chanted the slogans, “We want peace” arid “American warmongers.” . The demonstrations were in defiance of thp Home Secretary, Mr Chuter Ede’s. ban on political processions.
