USE ROPES
CORONER’S COMMENT ATTEMPTED RIVER CROSSING PA GREYMOUTH, Dec. 29. That mountaineering and tramping parties crossing West Coast rivers should use ropes was a rider to the verdict of a jury at Otira today that John Frederick Keenan, aged 21, met his death through accidental drowning in attempting to cross the Turumakau River at Aickens on December 27. The coroner, Mr E. H. Benfell, stated that in- the past 18 months, two other lives had been lost in that area, whereas he understood that the use of ropes would have prevented these fatalities.
