SALE OF CREAM

No Exceptional Demand

“ Cream on Sale.”—This notice appears prominently in at least one shop in Oamaru, but the proprietor told the Daily Times yesterday that the demand was spasmodic. Many people, he said, ordered cream for Christmas Day, but subsequently cancelled their orders. Others did not place orders until Christmas morning, and the milkmen then had difficulty in supplying their wants.

The demand was not remarkable, although it could be described as fairly considerable, said an official of a large milk processing firm. It was estimated that about 100 gallons were consumed on Christmas Day, and about 250 gallons since cream was temporarily lifted from ration on December 19. Some people, he said, had the idea that there would be a tremendous rush on cream as soon as (he rationing was lifted. This was not the case, as people had become so accustomed to going without cream that it would take some time for them again to acquire the taste. There was ample cream available for all local requirements. Cream will again be placed on ration on January 16.
