WON AS HE LIKED
DESWORTHY MADE EXHIBITION OF FIELD Special to the Daily Times ASHBURTON, Dec. 26. Taking charge six furlongs from home, Desworthy put a break on the Ashburton Trotting Cup field and was never afterwards headed, winning as he liked by nine lengths from Morning Wings, who was a length clear of Keen Blade, with Mistydale right up next in front of Jimmy Scott and Fantom. The favourite, Acclamation, broke at the start and was never in the picture at any stage.
Mine Host was the best away and led past the stands from Castigate, Desworthy, Morning Wings, Bancor, Mistydale and Beverley Volo. Racing past the mile, Mine Host was still showing the way, but shortly afterwards Desworthy took charge and led to the straight from Great Venture and Will Carey, both in a break. Morning Wings, Bancor, Mistydale, Keen Blade and Jimmy Scott. Once in line for home, Desworthy strode away and although both Morning Wings and Keen Blade challenged solidly, he was not troubled to win as he liked. Well placed throughout. Burns Night took charge inside the final furlong in the Champion Stakes to win comfortably from Van Dieman with Tiberius and Flight Commander at the head of the remainder. The race was marred by a mixup shortly after the start. Van Dieman led past the stands, but down the back gave way to Tiberius, who led past the six furlongs from Van Dieman, Morano, Burns Night, Flight Commander, Green Spear and Chief Eagle. Van pieman was first to turn for home from Tiberius. Burns Night, Morano, Flight Commander and Chief Eagle, but once into line, Burns soon asserted his superority.
