GREAT NORTHERN FOAL STAKES LAST EVENT TO OUTSIDER PA ' AUCKLAND, Dec. 26. The Auckland Racing Club's summer ■meeting was opened at Ellerslie today in sultry weather. The track was fast. The attendance was 47,000, and the totalisator handled £322,339 10s, a New Zealand record, against £305,316 last year. The three-year-olds Sweet Spray and Beaumaris made gallant efforts in the Auckland Cup, but were beaten by a six-year-old marc, Swanec.
