SURGEON TILTS AT “TONSIL CUTTERS”
LONDON. Too many tonsils are being removed from children, complained Mr T. B. Layton, prominent London surgeon. Writing to the medical world he declared the excessive removal of tonsils now being carried out is not surgery but mutilation. “Is it right that one out of every two children born into .this world should have them tonsils out before the age of five? ” he asked. Of 1500 children under five, he calculated, 50 per cent, had had their tonsils removed. Saying there were too many hasty decisions that tonsils were “ enlarged,” he added: ‘‘This word, by becoming part of the daily chatter of the unthinking here in the medical profession, has done much harm.” —Reuter.
