ATOMIC DIET FOR OYSTERS

Atomic* by-products would he used in an attempt to fatten oysters, it was announced to-night. The United States Atomic Energy Commission at the same time hoped to learn more about the accumulation of radio-active material in marine life. Dr Clarence Cottam, of the Fish and Wild Life Service, said scientists disagreed on the type of food consumed by oysters. Consequently no successful method of artificially conditioning 1 them had ever been developed. Organisms suspected of being oyster food would be grown in water containing radioisotopes. These “hot” organisms would be fed to laboratory oysters and the food digested into their tissues then might be determined by chemistry and radiation meas : urement.
