FRY LIBERATED

Restocking Of Rivers

Advice that the Department of Internal Affairs had liberated 10,000 brown trout fry in four different places in lagoons near Birchwood Station, at the headwaters of the Ahuriri River, was received at Thursday night’s meeting of the Waitaki Acclimatisation Society. The letter added that when liberated, the fry were in excellent condition and had survived the journey from Wanaka to Birchwood without loss. It was hoped that the contribution would aid in the restocking of rivers in the Waitaki district.

Concern was recently expressed at the difficulty of keeping the Ahuriri River stocked with rainbow fry because of the serious flooding which often occurred in that district. As it was the council’s wish that satisfactory fishing should be provided in that river for local and visiting anglers, the secretary was asked to write to the Department of Internal Affairs, inquiring into the possibility of obtaining rainbow fry. The Department of Internal Affairs replied that the controlling office in Wellington would be advised of the request, and if the ova could be supplied from Turangi it could be hatched at Queenstown for the society. It. was decided to advise the department that an order for 100,000 fry would be placed, and to ask for a quotation for that number. It was mentioned that the fry would not be available for liberation this year.
