DAIRY COWS AT SHOW
REPRESENTATIONS TO A. AND P. SOCIETY
A deputation from the Oamaru branch of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in connection with the milking of dairy cows on Show Day was received at yesterday's meeting of the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association.
Mr H. Hay said lie was under the impression that cows were not milked as soon as or as often as was necessary on the day of the show, and he asked if a decision or definite ruling on the matter of milking cows in full milk at the time of the show had been agreed upon. Mr J. A. C. McKenzie, who was in the chair, stated that the problem had been discussed from time to time, but no definite ruling had been made. Mr J. C. Cowan said that the owners of the cows would milk them as soon as they had been judged, but if cows were milked before being judged, the placings of competitors could be changed. Mr McKenzie said it was the aim of members to see that the animals were well treated and he thanked the society for its interest in the welfare of the animals at the show. The Eveline Miniature Rifle Club was granted the use of buildings at the Show Grounds next year. Four new members were elected.
Mr W. Malcolm, vice-president of the New Zealand Meat Board, addressed members on the latest developments in the meat industry. The secretary. Mr C. C. Gillies, reported that the work of painting the grandstand would be finished this week, and the president stated that the sheep pens would be completed in time for the association's show.
