DRY CONDITIONS

SLOW SPRING GROWTH Conditions continue to be dry in North Otago, with some cold nights 'and mornings. The spring growth is slow, owing principally to the lack of moisture. A good rain' is badly needed over the whole of the district. Stock has done very well up to the present, and there has been a good lambing. Wheat. —New season’s crops are still holding their own, and have recently been rolled because of the dry weather. Stocks in store are on the low side, but the demand is very slow Oats.—With the exception of an odd order for Duns and Algerians, there has been very little inquiry from the North Island. It does not appear at the moment that there will be any export demand. The demand for seed is practically finished, as it is getting on the late side for sowing. Chaff. —One or two lines have been on offer, but the quality has not come up to the standard of good bright oaten sheaf, and lower prices have had to be accepted. " Seeds. —With the exception of the Government tender which came out this week for Palmerston North, there has been very little outside inquiry for seeds. Because of the dry conditions prevailing, it is not possible yet for any growers to shut up many areas for seed. The dry weather is also curtailing the retail demand for pasture seeds.
