Budget Expansion For United Nations Meets With Strong Criticism
NZPA—Copyright Rec. 9 p.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 21. The United Nations secretarygeneral, Mr Trygve Lie. to-night proposed an expanded Budget of 44,314,398 dollars for 1950. This estimate was 827,270 dollars higher than the Budget approved for 1949. It will come before the General Assembly next month. ' Mr Lie’s Budget was strongly criticised by the Standing Committee of Budgetary Experts, which operates independently of the secretariat staff. The committee recommended a 1,786.750-dollar cut and said it noted a persistent and dangerous trend in which some top-level members of MiLie’s staff were building over-sized, self-contained administrative machines around themselves. The committee added - that the need for streamlining was important because of the increasing currency difficulties of the United Nations members.
