MEN’S HOCKEY
Markham Cup Matches
The second last matches in the first round of the Hockey Association’s Markham Cup competition were played at King George’s Park on Saturday afternoon. The match between Kakanui and Tainui B, which resulted in a win for Kakanui by 4 goals to nil, was played under good conditions, while the remainder of the matches were played in rain.
Tainui A played its best game to date to beat the inconsistent Rovers team by 6 goals to 1. The match between Tainui A and Oamaru A next Saturday should prove interesting, and might have an ultimate bearing on the outcome of the competition, as Tainui is in the top position in the competition with Kakanui. The third senior match between Oamaru A and Oamaru B was called off shortly after half tme, the score at that stage being A’s 5, B's 1.
The junior competition will resume next week, but results of non-competition matches on Saturday were:—St. Patrick’s 5, Oamaru nil; St. Patrick’s-Rovers combined 2, St. Kevin’s nil.
It was decided to play an extra round at the conclusion of the Oamaru Mail Cup competition for the Draper Cup, which has not been played for for a number of years.
