MANIOTOTO

LEADING RUGBY TEAM BEATEN . In the Maniototo Rugby competition on Saturday, Strath-Taieri, the leading team, was beaten by Gimmerbum by 10 points to nil. Played at Gimmerburn in almost perfect conditions, the match was a willing contest from start to finish. In the early stages, Strath-Taieri, as the result of superior loose play, was on top. It again displayed the weakness of noli working in the tight, however, and the Gimmerburn pack, once it settled down to give its best display this season, soon took control. Opportunities were few for either set of backs. Gimmerburn's points were scored in the second half, G. Clarke and F. Stringer scoring tries, both of which were converted by Paterson.

The greater part of the match at Naseby, between Ranfurly and the home team, was played in fairly heavy rain, with the ball and ground becoming very greasy before the . end. The forwards dominated play, with the backs, particularly those of Naseby, being content to kick and follow up. TTie only points in the game came from a try by Browning, converted by Kearney. Patearoa had the best of its match against Ida Valley. Although its advantage in the forwards was slight, the Patearoa backs were superior and were always dangerous. An unusul feature of the matches played was the failure of any one of the losing teams to register a point.
