VINCENT RUGBY IMPROVES Special to the Daily Times ALEXANDRA, May 29. The standard of football in Vincent improved considerably on Saturday, and some excellent games were witnessed. At Clyde, Matakanui again managed to obtain a win, but only after a very hard struggle. The Clyde forwards were equal to the Matakanui pack, but the Matakanui backs, led by Whitticase, were superior to the Clyde rearguard. Wilson, as full-back for Matakanui, was without doubt the best player on the field. At Bannockburn, Alexandra played a very hard-fought game, which was only decided in the last minute. In fact, the referee kept looking at his watch, but the ball did) not go out of play when Hamilton, playing on the wing for Alexandra, caught the ball in his own territory and raced for the line after warding off many opponents. This made the score 9—6 in Alexandra’s favour, and Wilson, the Alexandra half-back, who had played an excellent game throughout, piloted the ball between the ' posts to make the final score 11 to 6. At Alexandra, the country team suffered their first defeat for the season when Alexandra juniors played an outstanding game. Fenwick cut through the country defence brilliantly on several occasions.
