PUNT OVERTURNS
ELDERLY MAN DROWNED PA WANGANUI, May 14.
When a punt overturned in the Turakina River before daylight this morn|ng, John Kelly, a retired blacksmith of Turakina, aged 72, was drowned. He could not swim and was equipped with long gumboots and cartridge belts. Kelly was accompanied by Mr J. V. Fitches, of Marton, who was similarly equipped, but who swam out of a slightly flooded river on his back. Both men were in a party of three, the other being Mr R. Kelly, of Wanganui, a son of John Kelly. Fitches took the younger man across the river first and then returned for John Kelly. The party was going to a lake near Ratana for duck shooting.
