GLADING AND WOON

VICTORY TOURNAMENT PROFESSIONAL AND AMATEUR TITLES SOME BRILLIANT GOLF PA AUCKLAND, May 15. Christchurch players won both major prizes when the finals of the £7OO Victory golf tournament were played at the Titirangi Club’s course on Saturday. R. H. Glading (Christchurch Club) won the £75 prize in the professional event by defeating J. Weir, of Grange,' 5 and 3, and D. L. Woon of Waitikiri, in the amateur event defeated F. Buckler (Remuera) 2 and 1. In the semi-finals Glading beat James Galloway at the nineteenth after a lively match, and Weir beat A. E. Guy—who won the professional medal event of the tournament—at the last hole after having the better of no fewer than four stymies in the second half of the match. In the amateur section Woon was given a hard fight by J. P. Ralph, of Remuera, and Buckler scored a most meritorious victory over the experienced and capable A, R. Kitto, of Wanganui. Kitto needed a 3 at the eighteenth to keep the game alive, and, with typical resolution, fired a very bold putt at the hole. The match between Buckler and Woon was the best of the day, if not of the tournament. Woon had a round of 70 (33 and 37) and Buckler one of 71 (35 and 3(3). Woon began the second half with two 3’s, and indications were that he would make a sensational score. However, at successive bogey 5 holes, the twelfth and thirteenth, lie took 5 and 6 respectively, and soon afterwards, at the fifteenth, he lost another stroke. He finished 4,4, 4, against the bogey of 4,5, 4, but his brilliance had not been quite sustained. Glading did not finish out two holes, the eighth and twelfth, against Weir, but for the 13 holes he played his score was four under bogey. Except for drives pushed well out at the second, eighth, and twelfth hciles, he scarcely made an error, and his three 3’s and two 4’s in six holes of the second half were beautifully played. In the play-off for first place in the amateur section of the Medal Championship of the tournament to-day. Woon defeated E. W. Young (Titirangi) by one stroke, the scores being 73 to 74. Young three-putted on the last green to spoil a chance of a second tie. Two tied with 299 in the Medal Championship.
