■ i TUBERCULOSIS OFFICER DR THOMPSON LEAVING NEXT WEEK Dr Brian C. Thompson, who came to New Zealand over three years ago to be tuberculosis officer to the Otago Hospital Board, and who handed in his resignation in February of the year, will leave Dunedin next Wednesday to return to England by the Mataroa. Dr Thompson will be regional tuberculosis officer with headquarters in the Windsor area and will be a principal specialist under the United Kingdom tuberculosis control scheme. When asked what steps had been taken to replace Dr Thompson, the chairman of the Otago Hospital Board, Dr A. S. Moody, said that arrangements were already in hand and advertisements had been placed in English medical journals. “Meanwhile,” Dr Moody said, “I have made temporary arrangements to carry on the work of the tuberculosis department of the Otago Hospital Board. One of the men attached to the Medical Unit of "the Public Hospital, Dr G. Brinkman, will supervise the work of the tuberculosis department.” • As well as being tuberculosis officer to>, the Otago Hospital Board, Dr Thompson was also attached to the staff-of the Otago Medical School as lecturer in tuberculosis. Outstanding results were obtained from a scheme largely established by Dr Thompson in the board’s district for the surgical treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. Dr Thompson was responsible to the board for running the sanitoria and his clinic at the main hospital. When Dr Thompson handed in his resignation in February, Dr Moody expressed the concern of the board at the loss of qualified men who had obtained more lucrative posts elsewhere. It was becoming difficult, he said, to obtain, and to hold, good men, especiallv when the board had to recruit such staff frorn Great Britain, where salaries in equivalent positions were actually higher.
