OTAGO ENTRANTS SHOW UP WELL IN FIRST DAY OF UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT

PA WELLINGTON, Apl. 17. With excellent weather as an added impetus, the 1949 New Zealand University Easter Tournament got away to an encouraging start on Saturday. With the final athletics, swimming, basketball, cricket, and tennis points still to ceme, Canterbury lead with 121 points. Otago has 111 points, Auckland lOf, and Victoria 104.

Athtletics Records were bettered in almost every event on the first day of the university athletics championships at the Basin Reserve. The weather and the track lent themselves to good performances, and in *two cases records will not be recpgnised. J. M. Holland, Olympic representative, competing for Auckland University College, in a heat of the 120 Yards Hurdles, lowered his own record, and in the second heat F. W. Duckworth’s time was also below the previous best. The Otago University miler, J. D. Sinclair, retained his championship and clipped over two seconds from the record in a race in which he had no serious competition. Records were also broken by D. -R. Batten (Canterbury) in the heats of the 220 Yards and 440 Yards: J- G. S. Myles (Auckland), in a heat of the 440 Yards, though his time was not as low as that of Batten: G. C. H. Gilmour (Auckland), in the Discus Throw; J. Shackleton (Otago), in a heat of the Women's 80-metre Hurdles: and F. Spencer (Auckland), in the Women’s Javelin Throw.

Boxing Otago won the Boxing Shield. The final results were:— Bantam-weight: E. Gardner (C.) beat D. Wong (V.) by a technical knock out. Gardiner won primarily through the power of his body punching, a wellcfirected solar plexus punch virtually finishing the bout. Feather-weight: S. Davis (A) beat A Young (V.) on points. This was a closely-contested bout with little between the boxers. Light-weight: M. Callahan (O.) beat C. W. Orr (A.) on points. A solid straight left which he kept continuously in Orr’s face won the bout for Callahan. Welter-weight: J. Goldfinch (V.) beat H. Gibson (O.) on points. This was the best bout of the evening. By his bulldog tenacity and harder punching. Goldfinch gradually wore his opponent down, gaining a well-deserved decision. Middle-weight: W. Boyd (O.) beat K. Richardson (A.) on points. A heavy puncher, Boyd had Richardson down for seven in the second round. Boyd was the aggressor throughout. Light-heavyweight: D. McClymont (O.) beat G. Hutchinson (C.) by a technical knock out. McClymont opened the barrage in the second round and had Hutchinson at his mercv when the bout was stopped. Heavy-weight: J. Roberts (V.) beat J. Ingram (C.) on points. Roberts, by far the heavier, had more power ir his punches. Rowing

A dip in the ground in the run up ruled out as a record the broad jump by C.' M. Kay (Auckland), and, because of the following wind, the new time by B. Hill in the Women's 75 Yards Flat will not be recognised as a record. Results:—

In the Fours, of one mile, all four crews got away well, but Otago retired almost immediately with a broken swivel. Canterbury drew slowly ahead with Victoria close behind and Auckland gradually dropping back. Victoria made a big effort towards the end of the mile, but Canterbury won going away by a length. Auckland was four lengths back in third place. Auckland got a lead of about a-quar-ter of a length in the Eights oyer two miles, the other three crews going away pretty well together. Auckland led all the way, quickly fighting off Canterbury’s challenge at the mile, and won by two lengths and a-half. with Victoria five lengths away third, though a strong Otago challenge almost caught them on the finishing line. Canterbury and Victoria were the only starters in the Double Sculls. Canterbury established a slight lead at the start and went on to win by three lengths. Cricket
