OPPOSED TO JUDAISM

COMMUNIST DOCTRINE RELIGION VITALLY INVOLVED NZPA—Copyright Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Apl. 16. Rabbi Mattuck, in a Passover address at the Liberal .Jewish Synagogue in London, called on Jews to oppose the Soviet doctrine. He said that because the present Government of Russia aimed to spread its doctrine in other countries religion was vitally involved. “ The doctrine denies what Judaism proclaims, and in practice violates what Judaism commands. Jews loyal to Judaism must oppose it. They cannot treat with indifference or face with neutrality an issue which divides the world.” The Pope, in a Good Friday encylical letter to the Roman Catholic clergy of the world, expressed the hope for true peace in Palestine. He asked for the internationalisation of Jerusalem. The Pope said that laments of innumerable refugees continued to reach him, as did requests for help and protests against grave damage to religious institutions, churches and other cultural places. The Pope invited all Catholic bishops to emphasise the gravity of conditions in Palestine to their congregations, and to increase their prayers. Reuter's Jerusalem correspondent says that Good Friday passed unnoticed •in Jerusalem, except by a few members of the Christian community, who crossed to the Old City to attend services. The streets were thronged with Jewish visitors from other parts of Palestine and abroad for Passover week.
