Mr Beery, who was born in Kansas City, ran away from home to join a circus, and became an elephant trainer. He was first identified with films as a

female impersonator, and was notable for character roles in “ Big House,” “Hell Divers,” “The Champ,” “Grand Hotel," “ The Good Old Soak,” “ Bad Men of Brimstone,” “ Stable Mates.” and “Sergeant Madden.” He was awarded a gold medal as “ the world s best film actor ” by the International Motion Picture Exposition. in Venice, in 1934, He married Gloria Swanson, from whom he was divorced, and Rita Gilman. the latter marriage also being dissolved.
