Extra Licences For Nylons
Special Correspondent WELLINGTON, Apl. 15, Good news for women is contained in a decision issued by the Customs Department this week on the import of lisle and nylon stockings. The department announced that the import of a limited quantity of nylons from the United Kingdom will be allowed under the 1949 import licensing schedule. At the' same time, the department advised that licences will now be issued for lisle hosiery, applications for which were called for in December last.
Retailers welcome the news, but point out that it is now too late for further imports of lisle stockings to arrive from overseas for this winter’s requirements. It will also be some months before nylons can arrive on the licences, that will be granted now that the import ban has been partially lifted.
These neiY decisions have been made after strong representations to the Minister of Customs, Mr Nash, by the New Zealand Retailers’ Federation in the interests of the womenfolk. The imports of nylons, however, may prove to be fairly closely restricted, as it is cleanly the Government’s policy to foster the production of nylons within New Zealand from yarn imported from the United Kingdom.
