EASTER HOLIDAY
WEATHER REMAINS FAIR LIGHT SNOW IN CITY COLD TEMPERATURES Snow on Thursday afternoon and a bitterly cold wind in the evening did not augur well for the Easter holidays but Good Friday turned out to be quite a pleasant day, although there was a keen nip in the air. Fewer motorists were on the roads on Thursday evening and yesterday than was the case at Easter time last year. There was nevertheless a fairly steady stream of traffic to Central Otago and other popular holiday areas.
All the roads were in quite good order, said the secretary of the Automobile Association (Otago), Mr P. F. Harre, last night. Although snow was fairly general throughout Central Otago on Thursday, it did not lie on the roads.
The direct route to Wanaka near Ballantyne’s bridge over the Cardrona is again in use for traffic. The approaches were washed away by the heavy rain about three weeks ago, but Public Works Department men laboured hard till late on Thursday night in repairing the damage. Previously, traffic to Wanaka had to take a wide detour around the Hawea Flat area.
A comprehensive programme of Easter sporting attractions began in the city with the Easter bowling tournament and the Otago Lawn Tennis and Golf Championships. A united church service was arranged by the Presbytery of Dunedin in the Trinity Methodist Church last night.
