GRASS SEED TO BRITAIN CLOVERS PREDOMINATE New Zealand was the largest supplier of grass seed to the United Kingdom last year, according to official information received by Federated Farmers. Except for cocksfoot and miscellaneous mixture. New Zealand led in the main classes of clovers and ryegrass. Of a total importation from August to December, 1948, of 3432 cwt of red clover, New Zealand supplied the United Kingdom with 2236 cwt. France was the next highest supplier with 1167 cwt. New Zealand’s lead in white clover sales was much greater. From a total of 13,226 cwt, the United Kingdom bought 12,948 cwt from this Dominion, with only 200 cwt from Canada and 78cwt from the Netherlands.

As Italian ryegrass was prohibited from import during part of 1948, only perennial rye was bought by Britain--16, 581rwt from New Zealand and 783 cwt from Denmark.

Denmark was Britain’s greatest supplier of cocksfoot during the period of the listed returns. Her exports to that market were 15,714 cwt. while New Zealand supplied only 2465 cwt, and Sweden the smaller amount of 1723 cwt.
