HARVESTING DELAYED

RESULT OF HEAVY RAIN INQUIRY FOR CEREAL CROPS The heavy rain experienced throughout Otago in the early part of the week has delayed late harvesting operations, and as a result few samples of grain have been on offer to merchants. Where crops were standing, it is not expected that any damage will result from the bad weather, but among those which were cut ready for the "pick-up method ” of threshing deterioration of quality may result unless favourable conditions prevail in the next few weeks. ** There is a good inquiry for white oats, and any suitable lines are being readily accepted by millers. There is also an outlet for sound lines of barley and ryecorn, and wheat is readily saleable both to millers and for fowl feed. The chaff market continues to be steady, with supplies adequate for immediate deliveries. Potatoes are coming to hand in sufficient quantities for the trade, but the requirements at this time of the year are not great, as many persons are still using supplies from their own gardens. The quality of the potatoes is sound, and there is little evidence of blight. Business in seeds during the week was quiet, although there has been a firm tone with most lines. As a result of inquiries from overseas, the prices for high-testing lines of certified perennial ryegrass are firmer than those ruling a month ago. Crested dogstail and white clover also have had an inquiry, but buyers appear to have definite limits which they are not prepared to exceed. The cocksfoot crop this year is a small one. and it is unlikely that there will be a surplus available for export. On the prices ruling at present, however, it is unlikely that business would be possible overseas.

A better inquiry has been received for Chewings fescue, but browntop has been neglected. There is no variation in the prices of cowgrass and Montgomery red clover.
