DECLINE OF GAMBLING IN BRITAIN
Rec. 8 p.m. LONDON, Mar. 25. Britons gambled £141,000,000 less in 1948 than they did in 1947, according to the report of the Churches’ Committee on Gambling. The committee gave financial stringency and increased taxation as the reason for the 1948 gambling fall to a total of £650,000,000. Nearly 10,000,000 people however—about 29 per cent. ,of the adult population—staked a total of £69,000,000 on football pools. Britons also gambled £350,000,000 on horse racing, £210,000,000 on dog racing and £21,000,000 on other forms of gambling.
