. HISS PLEADS NOT GUILTY COMMUNIST SPY INQUIRY NZPA—Copyright Rec. 9 p.m. NEW YORK, Dec. 16. Alger Hiss, a former State Department official, to-day pleaded not guilty to the Federal Grand Jury's charge that he lied when he denied giving secret Government papers to the former Communist agent. Whittaker Chambers. The judge fixed January 24 as the tentative date for the trial, and set bail at 5000 dollars.
