GRANGE’S VAIN ATTEMPT FOR VICTORY After scoring 144 runs at express speed on the North Ground, Grange failed by 9 runs to gain an outright win over Kaikorai, and the game resulted in a fivepoint victory for the hill side. Fortunes fluctuated throughout, and the spectators were keyed to a high pitch of excitement as the Grange batsmen chased the runs in the last hour of play. Grange made 163 runs in its first innings in reply to Kaikorai’s total of 189. The hill side fared badly in its second strike until G. McGregor, the second last bats-, man, hit out vigorously to make 43 in 15 minutes. He scored five 4’s and four 6’s. At one stage Kaikorai had lost seven wickets for 56, mainly because of the hostile bowling of T. A. Freeman. Needing 153 runs, and with 55 minutes in which to obtain them, Grange launched a batting blitzkreig. C. J. Elmes took 21 runs off a single over from McGregor and compiled 41 in all, a score wmch included five 4’s and two 6’s. R. Blair also batted aggressively for 47.
