ATTRACTIONS IN CITY CENTENNIAL FUNCTIONS Although the fireworks display at Hancock Park to-night and the Centennial Flower Show in the Town Hall, starting next Wednesday, are the main items of interest in the city at present, there are numerous other attractions which will claim the attention of citizens and visitors alike. The novel sight of cars racing in a city street under the benevolent, yet watchful, eyes of the police and the traffic authorities will undoubtedly bring a large crowd to Crawford street at 12.30 to-day. The event will decide the quarter-mile sprint championship of the South Island. From this attraction, which will be over all too quickly for most enthusiasts, the numerous people with time on their hands

as they await the main attraction of the day may move on to a number of other items of interest. The Ravensbourne regatta, the amateur cycling championships at the Caledonian Ground, the softball matches at Hancock Park, the Fun Fair, the Art Gallery, the displays at the Museum and the cinema shows will all attract their quotas of devotees. Sunday will be the last day of the splendid exhibition of British rural handicrafts which has been on show at the Museum for the past three weeks, but the display of New Zealand paintings and Dresden china at the Art Gallery will continue for some time. For those who seek action, the life-saving competitions at St. Clair beach on Sunday afternoon will prove as popular as ever. - Monday will see a number of organisations embarking on their annual conferences. Chemists, architects, plumbers, and florists from all parts of the Dominion will meet at various places in the city, their conferences lasting from two to five days. The watersiders, too, will be active, although in a different field, as the annual inter-port cricket matches will be started. The tournament is to last throughout the week.
