HUGE INCREASE
TAX COLLECTION ARREARS ATTRIBUTED TO STAFF SHORTAGE N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 18. The Committee of Public Account's reported that £780,000,000 was outstanding in income tax collections, not including pay-as-you-earn arrears In 1930 the figure was under £80,000,000. The major amount owed is in settlement of the excess profits tax. The committee attributes the position to a shortage of inland revenue staff, and recommends that every possible effort be made to recruit fresh staff and overtake the arrears, which, they state, “must have a harmful effect on the budgetary position and encourage laxity in payment of taxes.”
