NOTES ON THE RUNNING

EDWARD WINS HUNT CUP Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, Aug 17. Fairyhouse and Bravura carried most of the money in the Hunt Cup and they re soon in charge, but Edward was handy after a mile and they were bundled along the back. Fairyhouse led over the kennels double, but at the next fence, the sod wall. Bravura fell, while Ballyaggan moved up. Edward J°m “ Fairyhouse at the last fence and went on to win after a hard fight, while Ballyaggan also headed Fairyhouse, who tired. Cloister was a poor fourth, never looking dangerous, with Appeasement further back' Faladco fell at the first of the stand double and Real Night came down at the second of the kennels double in the last round. Longbeach Handicap Our Maureen led Afton Water from the start of the Longbeach Handicap, while the top-weight, Special Flight, Ganiah and Tranbycroft. all three starting wide out, were soon handy, while Citrai and Faultrosa joined in after two furlongs. Our Maureen retired when the straight was reached, Citril taking charge. Spec.al Flight finished strongly, beating Citril near the post, while Afton Water hung on for third, with Ganjah fourth, while Connaught got up to head Tranbycroft. Sydenham Hurdles The Sydenham Hurdles proved easy for Prize Ring. Khadim was soon out clear with Kassi, Sphere, Prize Ring and Battle Chief following at intervals. Desert T'ek and Glad Fox moved up a little further on. Prize Rng improved his position at the six-furlong post and a furlong further on he was handy to Khadim and Kassai, with Glad Fox and Sphere handy. Desert Trek was further back. Prize Ring was travelling well at this stage and he was in front when the straight was reached. The race was all over, Prize Ring going on to win easily Ernada made h s appearance when the straight was reached and he followed Prize Ring, Sphere, and Glad Fox over the last hurdle. Glad Fox weakened in the run home, leaving Sphere to beat Ernada decisively, with Glad Fox fourth, while Desert Trek made a fast run for fifth. Khadim, Kassai and Battle Chief failed to stay, while Amorlad and The Dude were never prominent. Duality was making up ground at the home turn, but stopped quickly, his rider having broken a stirrup leather. Styx Hurdles Silverstream, Kosciusko and Flying Ace led early in the Styx Hurdles. Wane moved up leaving the straight and at the seven furlongs Kosciusko, Wane and Flying Ace had a good lead, with Ruling Moment and Montello d’Oro heading the others. Wane took charge two furlongs further on, followed by Kosciusko anci Montello d’Oro, while Hippodrome was next after a gap. This was the order st the last hurdle and Wane won very easily. Kosciusko tired to fourth, Montello d’Oro stalling off Hippodrome easily for second. John Gay made a late appearance for fifth place. Night Fighter turned round at the start, taking no part in the race, while Fading Light fell at the second hurdle.

Heathcote Handicap Detain was first out in the Heathcote Hand cap, but Alamode soon joined him, and then went on in front. Lord Elgin, Riverview, Findon, Good Cast, Belle Le'onne, and Hakim being others prominent, while Tweedside and Sumra joined in after half a mile. Alainode led Riverview, Detain, Findon, and Lord Elgin to the straight. Alamode lost his place a little further on, leaving Riverview and Findon in front. Findon finished well, drawing away in the last b't for a decisive win from Riverview, with Detain two lengths back, followed by Alamode. Then came Graeme, last away, but staging a great finishing run for fifth, while Lord Elgin was next. Lincoln Steeples The Lincoln Steeplechase was interesting all the way Red Glare jumped to the front at the kennels double after going about five furlongs, and he had a lead of several lengths with half the journey gone. After leading over Cutts, however, he nearly lost his rider, and when he recovered his seat he had dropped right back. Roman Ned then took the lead from Surpeen and Page’s Raid, with a gap to Town Survey, who had joined the tiring Spanish Main. Going to the kennels double Roman Ned was out clear, and he led Surpeen and Page’s Raid by two lengths over the last fence. Roman Ned looked the winner at this stage, but he tired and veered from the outside to finish on the inside rail. Page’s Raid headed Surpeen, who tired after that. Page’s Raid, hard ridden, came straight down along the outside fence and got up to beat Romen Ned by half a length. Surpeen was four lengths back, with Town Survey and- Spanish Main following at intervals. Abbey Lu ran off at the second last fence. Redcliffs Handicap Copper Coin and Beechwood, the two top-weights, had the finish of the Redcliffs Hack Hand cap to themselves. Young John set the pace from Royal Flash, Lady Melrose, Beechwood, and Royal Robe, while Wide Range joined in after three furlongs. Copper Coin also made her appearance at the home turn and joined Beechwood in the lead when well into the straight, where Banshee also became prominent. ' Copper Coin wore Beechwood down in the last few strides, while four lengths back Banshee heat Young John by a length, with Robingay, Royal Flash, Lady Melrose, and Responsive next. Winsome Lass and Great Chum lost their chances at the start. Selwyn Handicap The meeting ended with a big dividend in the Selwyn Handicap. Deep Harmony was smartest out, but, after two furlongs Flying Orders headed him, with Clyde Bridge, Julius Caesar, Playtos, Pensacola, and Night Blush all handy. There was not much change to the straight, but Flying Orders weakened at the distance. Deep Harmony taking charge, while Frances and Kirkella moved up. In an exciting finish Kirkella got up to beat Deep Harmony by a neck, while Frances finished'w'ell to cut Playtos out of third place. Legal Rose, Clyde Bridge, Flying Orders, and Julius Caesar were next.
