FORWARDS DISAPPOINT
TRAINING COLLEGE BEATEN ,9 A complete lack of co-operation amongst the forwards and .their inability to get into the rucks, were the main factors in the defeat of Training College by Universitv B on the University Oval, University winning by 19—8. ‘ There were many bright patches in which both sets of backs threw the ball about with vim, but the players were often caught flat-footed, and the handling, particularly in the early stages, was not up to expectations. Training College had a complete rearrangement of its back line, with the Otago full-back, R. Orr, playing in an inside position. Their opponents, who carried most of the scrums, showed more penetration and combination, and always looked like winning after taking the lead early in the second spell. University were the first to score, A. Averill kicking a penalty goal, and then Orr, with an oblique run, dashed through the defenders, to ground the ball wide out, his converting kick being in his best style, the half-time score being 5—3 in favour of College. Averill made a spectacular break-through on the resumption of play and sent Rainey over. Averill adding the extra points. R. Church, who was always a source of danger in his ability to find, openings, scored after a good exchange of passing. P. Inder, on the College wing, gathered in the ball at top speed and a 50-yard dash ended with a try—the most spectacular of the game. Church again had an important share in the movement, which ended in J. Hail crossing the line, and jtist before time A. Cunningham scored wide out, the final scores being: University B 19, Training College 8. Mr L. Millar was the referee.
