HELP FOR BRITAIN

Sir, —The Government’s action in calling a conference of all interesed in Britain’s trouble is to be commended. The Opposition is also giving full support, and it is to be hoped that something worthwhile will be the result of their deliberations. I would suggest that the Government adopt a 45-hour universal working Week. That would greatly increase production, and that is what is badly wanted to-day, and New Zealanders are quite capable of working a few extra hours per week to help Britain in her hour of need. To cut rationed foods would not help greatlv when spread over Britain’s 45,000,000 people. Even if New Zealand wrote off the whole or part of her sterling credit that would not help for very long. Britain and America saved New Zealand from Japanese rule, so surely New Zealand can do something substantial for Britain in the present crisis Hoping the conference will be able to iron out something that will be realty helpful to Britain.—l am, etc., Alex. Renton. Kaka Point, August 14.
