RUGBY FOOTBALL BROADCASTS

Sir,—May I request the Otago Rugby Union or some other important local body to use its influence in an endeavour to get the afternoon session of the radio on Wednesday, August 20, extended until the conclusion of the Auckland-Otago Ranfurly Shield match. Surely now that the power restrictions are lifted an > extra half hour’s broadcasting would not affect the power consumption to any great extent and as the staff of the broadcasting studios must have had a pretty good time during the restrictions, it should not make any difference to them. Many hundreds of us from this district alone made the long trip to Dunedin last Saturday to see the North Auckland-Otago game, but it is not convenient to travel in mid-week. We appeal to the Otago Rugby Football Union to do its best for us and endeavour to get the authorities to extend the broadcasting for that afternoon. There was widespread disappointment last Wednesday when Southland played North Auckland, and the broadcast was cut off at 4 p.m.—l am, etc., Maroon. Gore. [The broadcasting authorities advise that the relay from Carisbrook will conclude at 4 p.m. and the commentary on the remainder of the match will be recorded. It is hoped that arrangements can be made to • broadcast the recorded portion in the evening.—Ed. O.D.T.]
