ROAD ACCIDENTS

o FATALITIES INCREASE SIX MONTHS’ TOLL P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 14. Fatal traffic accidents for the first six months of the year show an increase of 24 per cent, over those for the corresponding period last year. This was announced to-day by the Transport Department. Of 126 people killed on New Zealand roads between January and June. 1947. 66 were occupants of motor vehicles. 19 were motor cyclists or pillion riders, 15 cyclists and 26 pedestrians. Fifty-two of the accidents causing these deaths occurred during daylight, 49 at night, and 13 of them were the result of motor vehicles striking railway trains or telegraph poles.
