BENEFICIAL RAIN

WHEAT ORDERS HELD UP Weather conditions have been fine this week, but the ground is very wet alter more than two inches o£ rain which fell over last week-end. The rain has come in good time, and should do an immense amount of good. However, alt work on the land has been held up for some time. Wheat. —Because of the wet state of the land, deliveries of seed wheat orders have been hold tip in merchants’ stores, but will go out as soon as the ground is dry enough to sow. The recent good rain will greatly benefit the winter wheat crops. Oats. —Oatmeal millers have reported that they are not accepting further oat contracts for next season because the oatmeal contract with Great Britain nas been cancelled. However, with the shortage of stocks in New Zealand and a bare market, there will'be a strong inquiry for white oats next season. It is pot clear yet whether the ceiling price of 4s per bushel will be increased to growers next season. Barley.—With the likelihood of an increase in the price of barley, there is a strong demand from growers for barley contracts this coming season. Chaff.—Merchants are finding it difficult to get chaff cut which has been purchased, and there is quite a fair local demand as well as a demand from the North Island. Seeds.—There is very little to report in the local market, but inquiries are now being made from farmers for spring sowing, and with the reduced prices for cocksfoot, etc.; there should be a better retail demand. Merchants are not keen to purchase new season’s Montgomery or white clover until there is a better outlet.
